The much-awaited worldwide Web3 takeover is imminent and unfolding right now. Hailed as the future of the internet, this newly envisaged version of the World Wide Web is one where blockchain technologies and token-centric contents reign supreme. As everyone clamors to get a ticket to the crypto club, social media sites which house a huge chunk of the world’s population are set to promote cryptocurrencies and NFTs.
The term “digital collectibles” is ready to take the social media world by storm and is expected to soon become all the rage when users all around the globe adopt and support them. Twitter already kick-started the journey with an NFT takeover on their platform in the beginning of the year. It was just last month that Meta debuted their NFT features on Instagram to a group of select users as part of their pre-launch testing process. In a bid to make Web3 contents more mainstream, they thought non-fungible tokens will be intriguing to users on this artist-centric app who both create and buy it. Next on the agenda is the release of 3D-based and AR-based NFTs that can be posted by users on their Stories.
Facebook is next in line to prepare for the official launch of an NFT space as a permanent tab on users’ profiles. Select profiles from the U.S. have stepped up as the pioneer to test out this feature before Meta releases it to the public. When finalized, the feature would allow users to easily share them from Facebook timelines to Instagram Home feeds and vice versa. The collectibles would provide information about the creators, collections and so on. Meta emphasized that there is no charge required to share or post these NFTs, so we can assume they are going to be hype-worthy.
This integration with Web3 aligns with Meta’s aim to explore new ways in which creators can thrive in the crypto ecosystem. Though there are global concerns about the environmental impact of NFTs, the social media giant has promised that they will be buying sustainable energy to negate the effects on environment. Perhaps finding green solutions while fusing with the blockchain realm is possible after all.
