Axie Infinity wants to reach out to hundreds of thousands of players with its free starter monsters. This will give gamers a taste before they spend any cash. The developer Sky Davis revealed its plans in 2021 and will start rolling it out by the end of Q1 2022.
Players have to purchase three Axie monster NFTs to play the Pokemon-inspired game. They can earn token rewards that can be exchanged for other cryptocurrencies. The platform’s play-to-earn model is built around NFTs (cryptographic tokens) that shows ownership of a digital item. Axie NFTs were at its peak in 2021, costing a minimum of $600 worth of ETH. Three Axie NFTs still costs more than $100.
With starter monsters, players do not have to rely on SLP reward tokens. The monsters will be part of the Axie Infinity game client. Jeff Zirlin, the co-founder of Sky Mavis, said the free starter Axies would create a smoother on-ramp to the game. It will solve a missing bridge between awareness and hard activation.
There is also the new V3 battle system that will be richer and more strategic than the current model. Players will also get the advantage of new battle cards, power-ups and other tweaks. The platform will roll out the updates by the end of this quarter. It should be noted that the new battle system will initially launch in an alpha state. There will be no token rewards.
Despite updates in the pipeline, Axie Infinity has been recording a drop in its play-to-earn economy. The SLP reward token and AXS governance token have lost significant value. Furthermore, the NFT trading volume has fallen considerably. Axie NFTs price has crashed. As such, Sky Davis announced plans to overhaul the token rewards model with the launch of the game’s 20th season. This week when the season went live, the tokens recorded a spike in value.
