Blockworks Opens Its Crypto Data to ChatGPT and Claude With an MCP Server

In brief

  • Blockworks launched a hosted MCP server on Oct. 1 that lets ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and other AI assistants query its crypto data directly.
  • It runs on the same data models as the Blockworks Unified API, which merges Blockworks and Messari data and covers more than 40,000 assets.
  • Access comes with a Blockworks API subscription, and what an assistant can read depends on what the key is entitled to.

Crypto research and data firm Blockworks has opened its dataset to AI assistants. On Oct. 1 it launched Blockworks MCP, a server that lets tools such as ChatGPT, Claude and Cursor pull its market data, onchain metrics and research when a user asks a question in plain language.

What MCP is and what the server exposes

MCP, short for Model Context Protocol, is an open standard that lets an AI assistant call outside data sources and tools. Instead of guessing a number from its training data, the assistant asks a connected server and works with the answer it gets back.

Blockworks hosts its server itself, so there is nothing to install. According to its developer documentation, users add one URL to their client and sign in through the browser with a Blockworks API key. ChatGPT users can install an official Blockworks plugin instead. The server offers five tools: one searches research and news, and two pairs let the assistant first look up which datasets exist and then read rows or time series from them.

The data covers prices, exchange data, onchain metrics, protocol financials, stablecoins, tokenized stocks, ETFs, treasury companies, funding rounds, token unlocks, sentiment, issuer disclosures, governance proposals, research and news, the company says. It sits on the same models as the Unified API Blockworks released on Sept. 24. That feed combines Blockworks data with Messari’s, which Blockworks bought in June, and covers more than 40,000 assets, over 300 centralized and decentralized exchanges and standardized financials for more than 400 DeFi protocols.

Blockworks pitches the product at exchanges, brokerages and banks. Its examples include a token listing packet with supply, unlock schedule and funding history, and a daily stablecoin brief by issuer and chain.

Who can use it

The product is aimed at API customers rather than retail users. Blockworks MCP comes with a Blockworks API subscription, and Blockworks publishes no price for it; companies without a key are asked to book a demo. The documentation adds that which datasets an assistant can actually read depends on what the API key is entitled to.

Accuracy is the open question with any AI data tool, because a model can fetch a correct figure and still restate it wrong. Blockworks co-founder Jason Yanowitz told Unchained that answers come back with the raw figures and sources so users can check the model’s work. He also said Messari’s own MCP server will be switched off once its customers have moved over.

Blockworks is not the first here. Developers have long pulled blockchain data through APIs from firms such as blockchain data company Bitquery and from indexing protocols such as The Graph, and CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap already run MCP servers of their own. The next thing to watch is when Messari’s server goes dark, and whether rivals answer with broader datasets or cheaper access for AI agents, which the ECB is also testing for payments.
