The Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) is stepping into the world of entertainment with a series of animated short films, The Degen Trilogy, to be produced by Coinbase. The short films will be created with the approval of Yuga Labs.
The Degen Trilogy will have characters based on the BAYC collection of 10,000 disinterested-looking ape non-fungible tokens. It includes the recently launched governance token – ApeCoin. Sources say the first film in the series will debut in June at NFT.NYC. Two others will come about in 2023.
William Swann, Coinbase’s Entertainment and Culture Marketing Director, in an official statement, said they have been inspired by the Bored Ape Yacht Club community. Coinbase is excited to co-create this film with them. A spokesperson for Coinbase revealed that the short films will premiere at live events. Additional viewing details will be revealed soon. It should be noted that a Coinbase Wallet, which is currently required to access the film’s site, will not be required to view the films.
But this isn’t BAYC’s first venture into the entertainment segment. Yuga Labs in October 2021 signed Guy Oseary, a veteran music industry executive, to represent the project as it lives Hollywood ambitions. It is also stepping into the world of online metaverse gaming called Otherside by acquiring the CryptoPunks and Meetbits NFT project properties from Larva Labs.
The Bored Ape Yacht Club is the world’s most popular NFT collection and one of the most popular non-fungible token projects on the market. BAYC’s Ethereum-based collections generated over $3.2 billion in total through combined secondary market trading volume.
