One of the biggest names in European football, FC Barcelona is very much keen to step into the metaverse, own an NFT collection, and maybe a cryptocurrency as well. The football club, earlier this year, took on Polkadot as a jersey sponsor.
Joan Laporta, FC Barcelona President, revealed at the Mobile World Congress 2022 that the club wants to create its own cryptocurrency. It wants to take up cryptocurrency to survive financially. This would make FC Barcelona the first major sports club to have its own dedicated crypto token.
Laporta said the club wants to do so itself. He added that FC Barcelona is different as it survives financially from what it generates through the sports industry. The club’s president highlighted that they have declined cryptocurrency firm offers for jersey partnerships as the team is developing their own metaverse activation. The top brass knows that full ownership of metaverse engagement is paramount. This likely steered the club to select Spotify over potential crypto partners.
FC Barcelona wants to be able to offer digital products to its members, fans and align with the value of the overall club. It wants to generate an interesting emotional experience. Laporta pointed out that they want to generate new opportunities for growth. The club’s goal is to win titles and make the fans happy. But FC Barcelona also wants to profit from opportunities in the sports industry as it’s a matter of survival.
