Hong Kong gets its first churches in the metaverse.
Reverend Enoch Lam Yee, Baptist minister of Hong Kong, started Me Church, a virtual platform for believers to attend church sessions. He believes that he has found the solution for those Christians who find it inconvenient or boring to attend church sessions in person.
In this year itself, Hong Kong has received two churches in the metaverse. These churches are built for the tech-savvy and fast-paced new generation.
What is Metaverse?
You’d have to be living under a rock if you have not come across the term “metaverse” yet. The metaverse is nothing but an interconnected network of three-dimensional virtual worlds. Users can enter the metaverse through numerous applications and platforms designed for this purpose. Plug in a virtual reality headset, and you can become so immersed in the metaverse that it actually feels like reality. It is often said that the metaverse will usher in a new era of online social interactions.
Reverend Enoch Lam Yee is known for his unusual ways of promoting religion. One such unusual way is his popular stand-up comedy show, So Gor (Brother Jesus). Lam remarked that the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic had changed the attitude of people. Youngsters, as well as older people, are prone to attending online services from home instead of stepping out.
Churches in the metaverse have existed globally for quite some time now. Such churches offer services that include sermons, Bible readings, hymns, and the collection of donations through cryptocurrencies. One such popular metaverse church is Life.Church in the U.S.A.
