Major tech giants in the world are gearing up for the metaverse. After Facebook rebranded to Meta and made their metaverse plans evident, Microsoft is set to join the line. However, unlike Facebook, Microsoft is not rebranding its position or introducing new branches dedicated to the metaverse. Instead, the Satya Nadela led company has acquired the third-largest gaming company in the world – Activision. The acquisition of Activision Blizzard Inc. will be complete in 2023, and the gaming company is valued at $69 billion. It is one of the biggest acquisitions of gaming companies in the history of Microsoft. In the past, we have seen Microsoft ramp up its efforts to solidify its position in the international tech space. After acquiring Discord, taking over Activision will put it in a strong place along with rival companies like Alphabet Inc.
The biggest news for the crypto space in these developments is the mention of metaverse from the CEO of Microsoft Satya Nadela. Nadela said in an official statement that gaming is the most exciting part of the modern tech world and has the potential to improve significantly in the future. At the same time, he mentioned that gaming in the future will inevitably be gaming in the metaverse. However, what remains in doubt is how far Microsoft can take its metaverse plans with several play-to-earn games on the blockchain already up and running. Microsoft recently delved into the metaverse with the Dynamics 365 Connected Spaces app in Microsoft teams. Microsoft’s entry into this space will definitely give a push to other GameFi startups and projects.
