This year, a brand new category was introduced in the MTV Music Awards, abbreviated as VMAs. The newly launched category is “Best Metaverse performance” and numerous digital artists all across the club are vying for the title.
About the VMAs
The MTV Music Awards were earlier known as Video Music Awards or the VMAs. The VMA debuted in 1984 and is known for honoring excellent performances in the field of music. Numerous artists all across the globe such as Madonna, Kanye, and the like have bagged VMAs in the past.
Some of the most popular categories in the VMAs are “Video of the year”, “Artist of the year”, and “Song of the year”. This year, a Web3 charm is added to the whole affair. The VMAs were graced with online and virtual performances for the first time in history.
The rising popularity of the Metaverse
In the first year of its introduction to the VMAs, there were six nominations for six acts in the virtual category. Ariana’s “Rift Tour”, “The Virtual” by Blackpink, and “Charli XCX” by Roblox are some examples of the nominations.
The Paramount Game Studios-made The VMA Experience, which is currently available in the Roblox metaverse until September 3rd, was released earlier this month.
The metaverse category was added this year in response to five years of declining VMA viewership. The choice made by MTV to incorporate virtual performances could help it maintain its relevance as the metaverse expands and draws in younger listeners.
