Crypto.com signed Hollywood superstar Matt Damon as its face in 2021. The $100 million deal involved an advertising campaign directed by Wally Pfister, the cinematographer of Christopher Nolan’s ‘Inception’. The Crypto.com ads will be aired in over 20 countries. Matt Damon, who is also an active Crypto.com investor, said that he has never done endorsements similar to this before.
Recently, Damon’s first ad for Crypto.com was aired. The ad, titled ‘Fortune Favors the Brave’, shows Damon celebrating risk-takers. For instance, he walks past the Wright brothers and a mountaineer climbing Mount Everest. The ad ends with ‘Crypto.com’ appearing on the screen.
Netizens on Twitter took to the social media platform to voice their respective opinions on the ad, and most of those opinions weren’t very positive. Some Twitter users couldn’t believe that Matt Damon is promoting cryptocurrencies even after having amassed a fortune through his Hollywood career. Others criticized Damon’s pitch, which encourages viewers to be brave and invest their savings in cryptocurrencies. There were also tweets that ridiculed how the advertisement compares trading cryptocurrencies with feats such as climbing Mount Everest.
Damon’s deal with Crypto.com is yet another example of how cryptocurrencies have made their way into the mainstream. In 2021, Crypto.com and several other reputed names in the global crypto industry signed multi-million dollar deals with mainstream entities such as sports organizations. While crypto adoption is growing steadily around the globe, many countries’ governments are in the process of formulating regulations for keeping cryptocurrencies in check. El Salvador is the only exception, as the country became the first in the world to legalize Bitcoin as legal tender in 2021.
